The Top Seven River Trips in Mexico for Rafting

After talking with guides from Every State in Mexico where the sport of Rafting is practiced we put together a list of the top seven rafting trips in Mexico.

1: The River Jatate, in the state of Chiapas is classed as one of the best river trips in Mexcio and the world and you are able to run trips from one day to eight days on the river, passing through beutiful jungles and non stop rapids. Unfortunatly you can only run this trip in its low season between December and February and it is always best to investigate the situation with the Zapatistas before entrering the river.

2: The River Usimacinta, which is located on the border of Mexico and Guatamala is also classed as one of the best river trips in Mexico and the world, but not so much for its rapids, more so for amazing surroundings as you pass by one of the most important Mayan Ruins, "Yachilan". The trip down the river Usimacinta takes ten days and it is an incredible experience. If you are interested in this trip you should get in contact with Mauricio Morales from the company Expediciones Mexico Verde, as Mauricio was the first guide to navigate and explore this beutiful river.

3: The River Cuilco in Tapachula, Chiapas is classed as the best commercial river trip in the country, one rapid for 30 km, class 2 to 5, passing through beutiful coffee plantations and can be run from June through until November. If you are interested in this trip you should contact Alex Aitken from the Company Imagina Rafting as they operate the river from June to September.

4: The River Copalita in Huatulco, Oaxaca, has a section of river known as "Alemania" and this is in the same level as the river Cuilco, constant rapids, beutiful rock formations and can be run from June through until December. If you are interested in this trip you should contact Beto Trevino from the company Explora who run trips daily from the town of Huatulco.

5: The Upper Filo river in Veracruz state, is just a classic river trip that unfortunatly at present there is no companys operating on this section of river. in Kayak it can be run in one day but in a raft you need two days. you pass through a canyon with impresive walls up each side of you and you challenge a whole bunch of class 4 rapids.

6: The River Antigua in Veracruz has a section known as "Barranca Grande" which is another classic to be run, 50 km of non stop class 2, 3 and 4 rapids. The first section is narrow and the water is cold and reminds me alot of the rivers of the Alps in France. In a Raft you need 2 days to run the trip. If you are interested in this trip you should contact Waldemar Franco from the company Rio y Montaña. The river can be run from SEptember through until December.

7: The Upper Papagayo River in Guerrero,is the last of the 7 best rivers in Mexico. The river runs through an incredible canyon of rock formations up to 40 meters in hieght. The rapids are of class 3 to 5 and there is loads of undercuts so be carefull. the season for running this section of the river is from October through until December. If you are interested in this trip, you should contact Alex Aitken from Imagina Rafting who operate trips in these months.
